I’m Alejandro, a researcher in AI/ML and data science, mainly for environmental studies and land-planning applications, currently based in London, United Kingdom.
I’m passionate about technological developments, especially those with social impact. I’ve contributed and led a variety of multidisciplinary projects underpinned by data analysis. In my spare time I enjoy my family 👪, hiking 🏔, cycling 🚴, and testing coffee svarieties (as a proud representative of my home country, Colombia 🇨🇴).
I hold a PhD in Physical Geography and an MSc in Environmental Modelling, Monitoring and Management from King’s College London. Working with researchers at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, during my postgraduate studies I built solid foundations in data science and large-scale cloud computing to propose methodologies for characterising the spatial and temporal drivers of deforestation in the Amazon biome using satellite products and geospatial information.
I’m affiliated with The Alan Turing Institute as a Research Fellow (April 2023 – present). Thanks to the support of a diverse team of professionals on my team, the institute and the communities I belong to, I’ve been able to focus on developing open-source software and tools for the environmental sciences. I’m also training in open-science leadership, sharing my experiences through my blog and social media.
